Favoured Warriors Woundstock Championship

The heat of the summer had dissipated and the cool of the fall made for a perfect day to play the inaugural Woundstock Championship. The Humber Valley Huscarls had ridden their unstoppable star Griff Oberwald past the Striver Pirates to earn their first ever championship berth in their first ever season. On the other side of the ball would be the undefeated Nascaupi Warriors who had over come the Moncton Machine handily in their semi final match-up to enter the championship heavy favourites.

League officials would let the teams go in front of the small championship crowd of 164,000 including observers from some of the new teams going to take a swing at the fishbowl. Representatives from the Kenamu Dragons, Dome Mountain Desperadoes and Hamilton Heights Rat Pak were out to enjoy the spectacle.

The Venerable Bede played an early hand and somehow managed to get the super-star tirador Paco "the Beast" Rabanne into one of the Norsemen's galleys and he would not be available for the match. Was this an attempt to cripple the aerial assault of the Warriors and force them into a pounding ground game? The sturdy humans and their dwarven allies may have harboured such plans against the fragile elves. The Huscarls won the coin toss and elected to receive.

A poor kick led to a touchback and after overpowering the elven line several Norsemen broke deep into the backfield with the ball. They did not count upon the elven pursuit speed however and a desperate lunge from the new Tiranizar, Felix Trinidad, stripped the ball from the hands of Norse Catcher Eric the Red where it bounced into the waiting hands of "the macho one" Hector Cammacho. After some sloppy hitting from both sides The Warriors managed to run the ball to the Norsemen's endzone where Rico Suave opened the scoring. 1-0 for the Warriors, First Quarter.

The Warriors kicked again and the Huscarls came at them again although the nerves of the big game seemed to be playing on them. They were running hard but too hard as their footing did not seem sure. In fact, the wolves of the northern seas had scored as blitzer Beorn was racing to the endzone with the ball and a clear lane - but the desperate Norseman slipped at the goal line as he looked over his shoulder with the sounds of pursuing Warriors drumming in his ears. Those Warriors scooped up the fallen ball and in true championship form were almost instantly back at mid field and charging to open the lead.

It was a near thing as the mighty Oberwald came across the field in an effort to stop the charge but alas the Warriors would not be denied and Hector "macho" Cammacho would find a way through the Huscarl defenders to pay dirt.

It would be 2-0 at the half and kicking, things looked glum for Bede's crew.

Until now the Warriors had suffered the brunt of the physical abuse but nothing serious as both teams were healthy going into the second half. Although the Warriors had lost rookie Tirador, Fransisco de Aguilar for the rest of the match as the over excited rookie was a little over enthusiastic in a hit late in the first half.

The Faithful would have their reply in the second half kick off as they proceeded to convince the officials as to the error of their ways and the replacement officials would understand what "let 'em go" meant. The Warriors fielded the kick and made their standard strong side push up the left wing. A surprise diving tackle almost derailed the elven express but Jesus Garcia, known more for his assists than hits, dropped the Leif the Lucky where he stood as "the macho one" came in to give Huscarl blitzer Beorn a seat in the stands. With the left wing wide open the elves took the ball and made for green with valiant lutchadors running interference.

It was at this moment that the second half took it's tone. A most despicable cheap shot as a veritable pack of unscrupulous Norsemen viscously assaulted a prone Silibili. Alas the sour Huscarls would ceaslessly beat on the helpless Saurus until he was slain before his teammates could come to his rescue. There were just too many of them. The Faithful could only watch in horror as the apothecary Seniorita Gala Vicara had already worked her magic on a seriously injured Rico Suave. Rico would run in the score and the Warriors would promise revenge. As many already knew this championship was being dedicated to the memory of Sergio Aragonnes who was killed, although at least in a fair hit, by the Moncton Machine in the semi finals.

The observers for the Kenamu Dragons have sworn vengeance against the Huscarls in Fishbowl II for the affront to their brother Saurus but only time will tell if their head coach has the intestinal fortitude to carry out such a threat, or that his team will have the ability. The Dragons could be in for an interesting season as Silibli was the target of many assaults through out his short career with the Warriors and while popular among his teammates and the faithful, he was not well liked among the other teams in ABBA.

The Warriors were now up by three in the second half and kicking to the frustrated and increasingly violent Huscarls. The Huscarls did manage to take advantage of the Warriors desire for revenge on this drive. The Warriors over pursued and gang tackled inflicting several injuries. After an exchange of lightning bolts, star catcher Leif the Lucky managed to slip through and put the Huscarls on the board. It was three to one and with enough time left that it was still possible for the Norsemen to force the game into overtime but it would take some luck.

Del Estado calmed his boys down and the Warriors were much more conservative on when they received the kick. They began an unusual push up the middle into the heart of the Huscarl defense. Their slow plod was based on ball protection and at one point formed a brief cage until the Oberwald single handedly broke it open in an attempt to drag his disheartened teammates kicking and screaming into overtime. The Warriors would seriously injure Oberwald and Saint Cuthbert would be summoned to save the star. It was all the Warriors needed however as "the golden boy" Oscar de la Hoya who fielded the initial kick would carry the ball all the way to the other end of the pitch and score the final TD of the game sealing the Triple Crown.

The Warriors began celebrating but there were still a few ticks on the clock and they had to send a few players out so the Huscarls could try to work out their frustration. A member of the faithful expressed his sentiments at such cheapness and knocked out the dirtiest player on the Huscarls, lineman Aethelred the cautiously optimistic, with an empty champagne bottle hurled from the upper deck. Undaunted the Huscarls would take their last malicious hits and the game would end. Four to one for the Warriors who are the first team ever to go undefeated in a tournament in ABBA and have won the coveted triple crown of Fishbowl, Winterrude and Woundstock.

The Warriors have decided that the long pounding year of three tournaments including the playoffs of each one and several charity games have cumulated in a tired and bruised squad as represented by the recent rash of injuries the team has suffered. To this end, Jeffe del Estado has announced that the Warriors will not be entering in the Fishbowl II tournament but will rest up for the fall. They will be available for charity matches and may return in the future but right now the boys have earned a rest.

Neither team has yet announced how they plan to spend their respective purses, 110,000gc for the Huscarls and 170,000gc for the Warriors although the Warriors are said to be looking at a star pescator named Manny Ramirez.
